GU New Style Multipoint Gearbox 45mm Backset 92PZ — Lift Lever Door Lock

Genuine GU replacement gearbox for new style multipoint locks — 45mm backset, 92mm PZ centres, 8mm spindle. Repair your uPVC door lock, not replace the door.

GU New Style Multipoint Gearbox (Lift Lever) When a uPVC or composite door stops locking properly, the gearbox is almost always the culprit — not the whole multipoint strip and certainly not the door. This genuine GU centre case is a direct replacement for new style GU multipoint locks with a 45mm backset and 92mm PZ centres, running a single 8mm spindle. Fitting one is a straightforward swap that restores full lift-lever operation for a fraction of the cost of a new door or a complete lock replacement.

This is a genuine GU part, not a pattern copy — so the internal cam timing, latch geometry and deadbolt throw match the original exactly. It can be identified by the part number 6-30005-AS-01 stamped on the gearbox body (the final letter varies — 01A, 01C and similar are all the same unit) and by the EUROPA 45-92-8 label, which reads directly as 45mm backset, 92mm PZ, 8mm spindle. Correct engagement first time means no dragging, no forcing the handle, and no repeat failure in six months.

Key Benefits for uPVC & Composite Door Owners:

  • Exact 45mm Backset & 92mm PZ Fit – The two measurements that decide whether a gearbox fits are the backset (faceplate to spindle centre) and the PZ centres (spindle centre to cylinder centre). This unit is built to 45mm and 92mm respectively, so if your existing gearbox matches, it drops straight in without modification.
  • Repairs the Fault Rather Than the Whole Door – A seized or stripped gearbox is the single most common multipoint lock failure. Replacing just the centre case saves the substantial cost of a full lock strip or a new door leaf, and takes an afternoon rather than a fitter's day rate.
  • Genuine GU Manufacture – Aftermarket copies frequently fail on cam timing, leaving the handle stiff or the deadbolt short-throwing. A genuine GU case gives you the original tolerances and the service life the door was designed around.
  • Reversible Latch for Left or Right Hand Doors – One part covers either door hand. Pull the latch gently and rotate it 180° before fitting, so you don't need to work out handing before you order.
  • Full Lift Lever Operation Restored – Lifting the handle re-engages every locking point along the strip, then the key throws the 20mm deadbolt. A properly working gearbox is what pulls the door tight to the frame — which is also what stops draughts creeping in around a sagging seal.
  • 20mm Deadbolt Throw for Solid Security – The 32mm high, 7mm thick deadbolt throws a full 20mm into the keep.
  • 195mm Case – At 195mm long (excluding fixing lugs), 60mm deep and 14.5mm wide, the case sits in the same pocket as the original with no routing or enlarging of the door.
  • Straightforward DIY Replacement – With the door open and the multipoint strip unscrewed, the centre case unbolts and the new one goes back in the same position. Most competent DIYers manage it with a screwdriver and a bit of patience.

Please measure your existing gearbox carefully before ordering. The backset (45mm) and PZ centres (92mm) must both match — a gearbox that is right on one and wrong on the other will not fit. If you are unsure which size you need, please contact us and we'll be happy to help.

Pro Tips:

Pro Tip: Before ordering, check the top corner of your existing gearbox — this is what separates new style from old style GU. New style cases have a vertical groove machined into the top corner to clear the handle bolts; old style cases have that corner cut away instead. The two are not interchangeable, so a quick look at the corner will save you a return. While you're there, note the part number and the EUROPA label — a 45-92-8 label confirms 45mm backset, 92mm PZ and 8mm spindle in one glance.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will this gearbox fit my uPVC door?
It will fit if your existing gearbox has a 45mm backset and 92mm PZ centres, and is a new style GU unit. Measure the backset from the front face of the faceplate to the centre of the square spindle hole, and the PZ from the centre of the spindle hole to the centre of the cylinder hole. Both figures must match — the backset alone isn't enough.

How do I tell whether I have a new style or old style GU gearbox?
Look at the top corner of the gearbox body. New style GU cases have a vertical groove there to accommodate the handle bolts; old style cases have the corner removed altogether. This gearbox is for new style locks only and will not work as a substitute for an old style unit, even if the backset and PZ match.

Is this a difficult job, and do I need any special tools?
No special tools are required — a screwdriver and reasonable care are enough for most people. With the door open, unscrew the multipoint strip from the door edge, withdraw it, swap the centre case for the new one and refit. Take your time lining the case up squarely before tightening down, as a case sitting slightly proud will make the handle feel stiff.

Do I need to replace the entire multipoint lock, or just the gearbox?
In the vast majority of cases the gearbox is the failure point — the strip, hooks and rollers usually outlast it comfortably. If the handle has gone floppy, feels gritty, won't lift, or the key turns without throwing the deadbolt, the centre case is almost certainly the cause and replacing it alone will restore normal operation.

Which way round does the latch need to be, and does that affect what I order?
It doesn't affect your order at all. The latch is reversible for left or right hand doors: apply a slight pulling force and rotate it 180° into the position you need before fitting. One part covers both handings, so there's no risk of ordering the wrong side.

Why Choose the GU New Style Multipoint Gearbox?

A door that won't lock properly is more than an inconvenience — it's a security worry every time you leave the house, and a source of draughts every time the wind picks up. This genuine GU gearbox puts that right at the source, restoring the firm lift-lever action and solid 20mm deadbolt throw the door had when it was new. Because it's a genuine GU part rather than a generic copy, the internal timing and geometry match the original exactly, which is the difference between a repair that lasts and one you're revisiting next winter.

JCP Hardware has supplied genuine uPVC and composite door hardware for over 30 years, and we know how much confusion there is around backsets and PZ centres. If you've measured yours and want a second opinion before you order, send us the figures and a photo of the gearbox and we'll confirm the fit for you.
