Key stiff, snapped or won't turn, or want a more secure lock? The part to replace is the cylinder lock, often called the door barrel or barrel lock: the part the key goes into. A door lock cylinder replacement takes a few minutes with a screwdriver. Measure the cylinder from the centre fixing-screw position to each end before ordering. The two sides can be different lengths, so record the internal and external measurements separately.

With the door open, undo the long fixing screw in the edge of the door, level with the keyhole. Put the key in and turn it slightly, about 10 to 15 degrees, so the cam lines up with the cylinder body, then slide the cylinder out. Fit the new one the same way and refit the screw. Check the lock works with the door open before you close it.
Measure from the centre of the fixing screw to the outside end of the cylinder, then repeat from the centre to the inside end. Write the size as two measurements, such as internal/external. A cylinder that projects too far beyond the door furniture can be more exposed to attack, while one that is too short may not operate correctly. Compare the new size with the fitted cylinder and the thickness of the door handles or security escutcheons.
