Want to stop a window opening too far? Restricted window hinges limit how far the window first opens, which helps keep children safe while still letting air in.
We stock the Securistyle Defender restrictor friction stay pair. If your hinges are fine and you only want to limit the opening, see our window restrictors.
Measure the metal track from end to end. Hinges usually come in steps of length, so match your old one.
Measure across the fixed track. Most uPVC window hinges use an 18mm track; slimline hinges use a narrower 15mm track.
Measure the height of the closed hinge. 13mm and 17mm are common.
Check whether the window opens from the side or from the top. Some hinges are made for one or the other.
The hinge stops the window at a limited opening. Check the listing for how the restriction releases, so the window can still be opened fully for cleaning or escape.
If your hinges need replacing anyway, restricted hinges do both jobs. If your hinges are fine, a separate window restrictor or child lock is quicker to fit.
This is a two person job, because the window sash is heavy once it comes loose. Open the window and have someone hold the sash. Undo the screws holding the hinges to the sash and lift the sash away, then undo the screws holding the hinges to the frame. Fit the new hinges in the same place, refit the sash, and check the window closes and locks evenly before tightening every screw.
An escape window must be able to open fully. Check the listing and building regulations before fitting restricted hinges to an escape window.
Yes, in most cases. Replacing both keeps the window moving evenly and supported on both sides. Our window hinges are sold in pairs.
