The handle on most modern uPVC windows. An espag (espagnolette) window handle has a square spindle on the back that turns the locking mechanism in the edge of the window. We stock inline and cranked espag handles, lockable and non-locking, in monkey tail and pear drop styles, from Yale, greenteQ, Mila, Avocet, Fab & Fix, ERA, Ultion, Trojan, Securistyle, Versa, Prima and Winlock.
To replace an espag window handle, match the style (inline or cranked), screw centres and spindle length of the old one.
Inline: the lever sits straight over the spindle. Cranked (offset): the lever is angled away from the window to clear the frame.
The distance between the centres of the two fixing screws. 43mm is the most common on uPVC espag handles.
Remove the handle and measure the square spindle from the base to the tip. Multi-spindle and Smart Spindle handles come with interchangeable spindles if you are unsure.
Lockable espag handles have a key or button. Non-locking handles are often used on fire escape windows.
Espag is short for espagnolette, the locking mechanism fitted in the opening edge of most uPVC casement windows. Turning the handle moves a rod along the edge of the sash, so locking cams engage keeps on the frame. The handle and the lock are separate parts: if the handle is broken but the window still locks properly, a new espag handle is usually all you need.
Inline espag Handles are "universal" in that they are reversible for left or right opening, and 43mm screw centres are common. You still need the right style (inline or cranked) and spindle length for your window.
An espag handle turns a locking mechanism inside the window edge. A cockspur handle has a hooked nose that closes over a cockspur wedge on the frame, and is found on older windows.
Usually not. If the spindle turns but nothing locks, the espag mechanism has probably failed. See our window locks.
