Older uPVC or aluminium window with a hook-shaped handle? That's a cockspur window handle. Its nose closes over a wedge or keep on the frame to pull the window shut. We stock replacement cockspur handles from Avocet (WMS), Yale Securistyle Virage, greenteQ Alpha, ERA Charisma, Winlock Stronghold, Trojan Sparta and Schlosser Technik, including locking handles and a 10-pack.
Cockspur handles are usually handed, so check left or right as well as the fixing and the height of the nose before you order.
Cockspur handles are usually left- or right-handed. Compare with the handing diagram on the product listing.
Measure the distance between the fixing screws and check the base fits the same position on the sash.
Measure from the base of the handle to the underside of the hooked nose. It must clear and pull the window onto the wedge.
Check the wedge on the frame is in good condition. Some handles come as a kit with a matching wedge.
Open the window, undo the screws under the handle's cover caps, and remove the old handle. Fit the new handle in the same position, then close the window and check the nose pulls the sash tight onto the wedge. If it doesn't, the nose height doesn't match or the wedge is worn.
A window handle with a hooked nose (the "spur") that closes over a wedge or keep on the frame. It does the locking itself, unlike an espag handle, which drives a lock inside the window.
Handing is described differently by different makers, so compare your window with the handing diagram on the listing. If in doubt, send us a photo.
Not on its own. An espag handle needs an espag locking mechanism in the window. On a cockspur window, replace like for like.
