Need a window that opens wide enough to escape through? Egress hinges, also called fire escape hinges, let the window open wide to give a large clear opening.
We stock egress friction stay pairs from Mila and Yale (Trojan Mega). If you also want to clean the outside of the glass from inside, see our egress easy clean hinges.
Measure the metal track from end to end. Hinges usually come in steps of length, so match your old one.
Measure across the fixed track. Most uPVC window hinges use an 18mm track; slimline hinges use a narrower 15mm track.
Measure the height of the closed hinge. 13mm and 17mm are common.
Check whether the window opens from the side or from the top. Some hinges are made for one or the other.
Building regulations require escape windows in some rooms, often upstairs bedrooms, to open far enough for someone to get out. If your window has egress hinges now, replace them with egress hinges.
Egress hinges open wide for escape. Egress easy clean hinges do the same, and also let the sash slide across so you can reach the outside of the glass.
This is a two person job, because the window sash is heavy once it comes loose. Open the window and have someone hold the sash. Undo the screws holding the hinges to the sash and lift the sash away, then undo the screws holding the hinges to the frame. Fit the new hinges in the same place, refit the sash, and check the window closes and locks evenly before tightening every screw.
Markings on the hinge often say so. If not, send us a photo and we'll check.
Not on an escape window. It must still open wide enough after the change.
Yes, in most cases. Replacing both keeps the window moving evenly and supported on both sides. Our window hinges are sold in pairs.
