Tilt and turn window stiff, stuck in tilt, or the handle turning without moving anything? Most faults come down to the handle or the drive gear (the gearbox in the edge of the window that the handle turns). Tilt & Turn Buying Guide

How a Tilt and Turn Window Works

A tilt and turn window opens inwards in two ways, controlled by the handle:

  • Handle pointing down: locked.
  • Handle horizontal: the window turns open like a door, hinged at the side.
  • Handle pointing up: the top of the window tilts inwards for ventilation.

On a tilt before turn window the order is reversed: horizontal tilts the window and pointing up opens it fully. This means the window tilts first and can't swing fully open by accident. The handles fit both types; the difference is in the mechanism.

Handle or Drive Gear?

If the handle is broken, loose or won't lock with its key, replace the tilt and turn handle. If the handle turns but the window won't change between tilt and turn, won't lock, or the handle feels stiff or slips, the drive gear inside the sash has usually failed.

What to Check Before Ordering

Spindle length (handles)

Measure from the base of the handle to the end of the square spindle. Tilt and turn handles in our range have 32mm to 40mm spindles.

Locking or non-locking

Choose a locking handle (with a key) for ground floor and easy-to-reach windows, or a non-locking handle where a key isn't needed.

Drive gear brand

Drive gears are brand-specific. Look for Maco, Siegenia, Roto or Hautau stamped on the faceplate in the edge of the window, and match the same model.

Markings and size

Note any part number on the faceplate and measure its length and width. Photograph it before removing anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my tilt and turn window stuck in tilt?

Often the window has been forced or the handle turned while the sash was partly open, so the mechanism has jumped out of position. Close the window fully into tilt before turning the handle. If it still won't change, the drive gear or the stay at the top may be damaged.

Will any tilt and turn handle fit my window?

Most tilt and turn handles use a standard fixing, but the spindle length must suit your window. Measure the old handle's spindle before ordering.

Can I replace a tilt and turn drive gear myself?

Usually, yes. With the window open in turn position, remove the handle and the faceplate screws, slide the old drive gear out and fit the new one. It must be the same brand and model.
