Birds nesting in the gutter? Cold radiator wall? Motorbike worth securing?

This is our catch-all for the bits that don't fit neatly under doors, windows or gaskets — gutter protection, home insulation products and heavy-duty security anchors. Everything here is aimed at the same thing: sorting a specific problem around the house without any fuss.

What you'll find in specialist products

Gutter protection (hedgehog brushes and clips).A hedgehog gutter brush is basically a long cylindrical brush that sits inside a gutter to help stop leaves, twigs, moss, and other debris from building up and blocking the water flow. Our hedgehog gutter brushes come in 4-metre lengths at 100mm diameter, with matching clips sold in packs of 20 to hold them in place. Ideal if you're tired of clearing the gutter every autumn or dealing with overflow down the wall.

Home insulation and frost protection. Small, high-value items that cut heat loss and stop cold-weather damage. Radiator heat reflector foil (5m x 50cm rolls) goes behind the radiator to bounce heat back into the room instead of letting it soak into the external wall. Hard shell outside tap covers stop pipes freezing and bursting in winter — one of those £10 fixes that saves hundreds in repair bills. Stormguard is one of the brands you'll see here.

Security anchors (ground and wall). Heavy-duty hardened steel anchors for chaining up a motorbike, pedal bike, trailer or high-value tools. We stock Burg Wachter's GA1 and GA3 models (SA1280 and SA1180) — these fix to a concrete floor or solid wall and give you a proper anchor point to loop a chain or D-lock through. A good anchor is the difference between a quick grab-and-go theft and one a thief won't bother with.

Alongside the main lines we carry related bits that drop into the same jobs — gutter clips and fixings, smaller strips of insulation foil, and mounting bolts for the anchors. If there's something home-related you can't find elsewhere on the site, it's worth a look here first.

Frequently asked questions

Do hedgehog gutter brushes actually work?

Yes — they physically stop leaves and debris settling at the bottom of the gutter where blockages form, while still letting water flow through. They don't replace the need to rinse through now and then, but they stop the big build-ups that cause overflow and damp patches on the wall below.

How do I measure for gutter brush?

Measure the total run of gutter in metres and round up — the brushes are sold in 4-metre lengths and can be butted together end-to-end. Most domestic gutters take the standard 100mm diameter brush. If your gutter is deeper or wider than usual, send us a photo with a tape measure in it and we'll confirm the right size.

Does radiator reflector foil really make a difference?

On radiators fixed to external (uninsulated) walls, yes — the foil reflects heat that would otherwise be absorbed by the cold wall back into the room. It won't transform a whole house but it's cheap, quick to fit, and noticeable on the rooms you treat. Less worthwhile on internal walls where there's no cold surface behind the radiator.

Will a hard shell tap cover stop my outside tap freezing?

In a normal UK winter, yes — the insulated shell traps enough warmth around the tap to keep it above freezing. In prolonged hard frost it's still worth isolating the supply indoors and draining the tap. Fit the cover before the cold snap, not after.

What's the difference between a ground anchor and a wall anchor?

A ground anchor bolts down into a concrete floor — ideal for garages and driveways. A wall anchor fixes into solid brick or block and is better where floor-fixing isn't practical. Both need a solid substrate; don't try to fit either into tarmac, lightweight block or a thin concrete skim — the anchor is only as strong as what it's bolted to.

Which security anchor do I need for a motorbike?

For a motorbike you want a heavy-duty hardened steel anchor — the Burg Wachter GA1 (SA1280) and GA3 (SA1180) are both designed for this job and will take a decent chain through the loop. Match the chain thickness to the anchor opening, and fit the anchor somewhere the bike can be parked close enough for the chain to reach the frame, not just a wheel.
