Want a fire escape window you can also clean from inside? Egress easy clean hinges open wide for escape, and also let the sash slide across so you can reach the outside of the glass.
We stock egress easy clean friction stay pairs from Cotswold (Sinidex) and Yale.
Measure the metal track from end to end. Hinges usually come in steps of length, so match your old one.
Measure across the fixed track. Most uPVC window hinges use an 18mm track; slimline hinges use a narrower 15mm track.
Measure the height of the closed hinge. 13mm and 17mm are common.
Check whether the window opens from the side or from the top. Some hinges are made for one or the other.
When the window is open, the sash moves across the frame, leaving a gap at the hinge side. That lets you reach through to clean the outside of the glass from inside.
Both open wide enough for escape. Easy clean hinges add cleaning access. If your window has egress easy clean hinges now, replace them with the same type.
This is a two person job, because the window sash is heavy once it comes loose. Open the window and have someone hold the sash. Undo the screws holding the hinges to the sash and lift the sash away, then undo the screws holding the hinges to the frame. Fit the new hinges in the same place, refit the sash, and check the window closes and locks evenly before tightening every screw.
No. Some open for escape only. Check your old hinge and the listing.
Yes, in most cases. Replacing both keeps the window moving evenly and supported on both sides. Our window hinges are sold in pairs.
