Key stiff, snapped or won't turn, or want a more secure front door? The euro cylinder lock (also called the door barrel or barrel lock) is the part your key goes into on most uPVC and composite doors. Remove the cylinder. Measure from the centre of the fixing screw hole to the inside end.

A + B should add up to the overall length of the cylinder. Write the size as two numbers, such as 35/45.
The new cylinder should stick out no more than 3mm past the handle. If you are between sizes, round down, but not so far that it sits behind the handle plate.
Lock snapping is a common way of attacking uPVC doors: the cylinder is broken at its weakest point to reach the lock. Anti-snap cylinders are designed to break at a sacrificial line if attacked, leaving the locking part in place.
The cylinder on its own meets the TS007 3-star standard, including snap resistance. Examples include Avocet ABS, Yale Platinum, ERA Fortress and greenteQ Orion.
Rated 3 stars only when fitted with 2-star security door handles. Examples include UAP and greenteQ 1 star cylinders.
Standard euro cylinders without an anti-snap rating suit internal doors and lower-risk uses. For a front or back door, an anti-snap cylinder is the better choice.

With the door open, undo the long fixing screw in the edge of the door, level with the keyhole. Put the key in and turn it slightly, about 10 to 15 degrees, so the cam lines up with the body of the cylinder, then slide it out. Fit the new cylinder the same way, refit the screw and check it locks and unlocks with the door open before you close it.
