Window dropping, sticking or won't stay open? Worn window hinges (also called friction stays) are a common cause. Standard hinges are the everyday hinges fitted to most uPVC windows.
We stock standard window hinges in pairs from Cotswold (Sinidex), Mila (iDeal), DGS (Elite), and the Nico Universal and Versa Retrofit hinges, which fit both 13mm and 17mm stack heights.
Measure the metal track from end to end. Hinges usually come in steps of length, so match your old one.
Measure across the fixed track. Most uPVC window hinges use an 18mm track; slimline hinges use a narrower 15mm track.
Measure the height of the closed hinge. 13mm and 17mm are common.
Check whether the window opens from the side or from the top. Some hinges are made for one or the other.
Standard hinges open the window in the normal way. If your window needs to open wide for a fire escape, choose egress hinges. If you want to limit how far it opens, choose restricted hinges.
The Nico Universal and Versa Retrofit hinges fit both 13mm and 17mm stack heights. Check the listing for how they are set up for each.
This is a two person job, because the window sash is heavy once it comes loose. Open the window and have someone hold the sash. Undo the screws holding the hinges to the sash and lift the sash away, then undo the screws holding the hinges to the frame. Fit the new hinges in the same place, refit the sash, and check the window closes and locks evenly before tightening every screw.
Yes. On uPVC windows the hinges are friction stays: sliding metal arms that hold the window steady as it opens.
Yes, in most cases. Replacing both keeps the window moving evenly and supported on both sides. Our window hinges are sold in pairs.
Choose the length that matches your old hinge. Don't choose a longer hinge than the space allows.
