Door dropping or rubbing on the frame? Worn or loose butt hinges are a common cause. Butt hinges are used on many uPVC and composite doors.
We stock butt hinges from Mila (Ideal 110mm and Pendulum rebated), Yale (Pendulum and Neon Paddock), Avocet WMS 115mm, Simonswerk K3282, and 3D butt hinges for composite doors from Trojan and ERA (Laird Challenger 3D).
Look at where the hinge fixes. A flat hinge fits a flat surface, an angled hinge fits an angled frame, and a rebated hinge is stepped to fit a rebate. Some, like the Mila Ideal and Avocet WMS, can be used flat or angled.
Measure the length of the hinge leaf, for example 110mm or 115mm.
Note the number and position of the screw holes on both leaves.
Check whether your door is uPVC or composite. Composite doors are heavier and often need a composite door hinge.
A butt hinge has two leaves that fix to the edge of the door and the frame, so it sits in the gap when the door is closed. Butt hinges are sometimes called pencil or edge hinges.
Before you replace a hinge, check whether it just needs adjusting. Most 3D hinges adjust with an Allen key for height, side to side and compression; the screws are usually under cover caps. The method varies by model, so check the instructions for your hinge. Replace hinges that are cracked, badly worn or won't hold their adjustment.
The Trojan 3D butt hinge and the ERA Laird Challenger 3D are made for composite doors. Also see our composite door hinges.
They are shaped and fixed differently. The easiest way to tell is to compare your hinge, open and closed, with the product photos, or send us a photo.
Only if the hinge is made for both. Some, like the Mila Ideal and Avocet WMS, are flat or angled.
If one is worn, the others usually are too. Replacing them together keeps the door hanging evenly.
