Replacing a smaller letterbox on a uPVC door? Some uPVC doors, especially older ones, have a 10 inch letterbox rather than the more common 12 inch. We stock the Yale Welseal 10 inch letterbox.
Measure your old letterbox carefully. If it is 12 inches across, see our 12 inch letterboxes, which have a much wider choice of styles and finishes.
Measure the width and height of the old letterbox plate on the outside of the door. The new plate should cover the same area so no old marks show.
Measure between the centres of the fixing bolts. Matching them lets you reuse the existing holes.
Measure the opening cut through the door. The new letterbox must cover it fully.
Check the thickness of your door against the range on the listing. Composite doors are often thicker than uPVC doors.
From inside, undo the fixing bolts or screws and remove the inner and outer parts of the old letterbox. Clean the door around the opening, fit the new outer plate, push the bolts through, fit the inside part and tighten evenly. Check the flap opens and closes freely before you finish.
Measure across the outer plate. About 10 inches means a 10 inch letterbox; about 12 inches means a 12 inch. If the bolt centres and slot don't match, a larger plate can sometimes cover the old opening, but check before you order.
Sometimes, if the larger plate covers the old opening and you can fix it securely. You may need to drill new bolt holes.
Our current range is complete letterboxes. If your spring has broken, a new letterbox is often the simplest fix.
