How to Measure a Thumb Turn Lock

Outside (key side)

From the centre of the fixing screw hole to the outside end of the cylinder.

Inside (thumb turn side)

From the centre of the fixing screw hole to the inside end, not including the thumb turn knob itself.

Write it as two sizes

For example 35/45. The two sides are often different lengths, so check which side the thumb turn needs to be on.

Check the projection

The new cylinder should sit almost flush with the outside handle. A cylinder that sticks out too far is easier to attack.

Thumb Turn Lock Buying & Security Guide

What Is a Thumb Turn Lock?

A thumb turn lock (also written thumbturn lock or called a thumb lock) is a euro cylinder that has a key on one side and a turn knob on the other. On a uPVC or composite front door you turn the knob to lock and unlock the door from inside, while it still opens with a key from outside. It replaces a standard key-and-key euro cylinder like-for-like, as long as the sizes match.

1 Star or 3 Star Thumb Turn Lock?

TS007 3-star cylinder

The cylinder alone meets the TS007 3-star standard, including resistance to snapping. It is the level most often recommended for front doors.

TS007 1-star cylinder

Gives a 3-star rating only when fitted with 2-star security door handles. A good choice if your handles are already rated.

Anti-snap cylinders are designed to break at a sacrificial line if attacked, leaving the locking part of the cylinder in place. Check the individual product listing for its exact rating and features.

Thumb Turn Lock Replacement

With the door open, undo the long fixing screw in the edge of the door, level with the cylinder. Turn the thumb turn slightly, about 10 to 15 degrees, so the cam lines up with the cylinder body, then slide it out. Fit the new thumb turn lock with the knob on the inside, refit the screw, and test it with the door open before closing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are thumb turn locks safe on a front door?

Yes, when you choose the right security level. A TS007 3-star anti-snap thumb turn lock is a high-security option for uPVC and composite front doors. If there is glass or a letterbox close to the lock, think about whether the thumb turn could be reached from outside.

Will a thumb turn lock fit my uPVC door?

If your door uses a euro cylinder, yes, as long as you match the inside and outside measurements. Most uPVC and composite doors do.

Can I get thumb turn locks keyed alike?

Some models are available in keyed-alike sets, so one key opens several doors. Check the product listing for keyed-alike options.

Which side does the thumb turn go?

The thumb turn goes on the inside of the door. Measure the inside length from the fixing screw so you order the correct size for that side.
