Door Knockers for uPVC and Composite Doors

Our door knockers range from traditional Victorian urn and doctor's knockers to modern slimline designs, including knockers with a built-in spy hole. Knockers fix in one of two ways:

  • Bolt-through: bolts pass through the door from the inside and screw into the back of the knocker. Very secure, but you need to drill through the door.
  • Face-fix: screws go into the front face of the door, so nothing shows on the inside.

If you are replacing an old knocker, measure the distance between its fixings so you can reuse the existing holes, and check whether it is bolt-through or face-fix.

Door Thresholds and Weather Bars

Water coming in under a door is usually fixed at one of two points:

  • Weather bars (also called drip bars or rain deflectors) fit across the bottom of the outside face of the door and throw rain away from the gap underneath. Most are cut to width, so measure the door, not the frame. End caps are available separately for some Exitex bars.
  • Door thresholds (cills) replace the base of the door frame. Check whether your door opens inwards or outwards, measure the full width, and look at low thresholds if you need easier, step-free access.

Door Security Extras

A door chain or door guard lets you open the door a little to see who is there, and a wide-angle spy hole lets you check before opening it at all. For the lock itself, an anti-snap door cylinder is the biggest security upgrade for a uPVC or composite door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a door knocker to a composite door?

Yes. Many of our knockers are made for uPVC and composite doors. Face-fix knockers are the simplest choice; bolt-through knockers need holes drilled through the door, so check the door's thickness and what is inside it before drilling.

Do I need a weather bar or a new threshold?

If rain runs down the door and in under it, a weather bar on the outside of the door is usually the fix. If the base of the frame is cracked, worn or loose, replace the threshold.

Will a weather bar fit my uPVC door?

Most weather bars are supplied in a standard length and cut to the width of your door. Check the length on the product page is at least as wide as your door.

What is a cabin hook for?

A cabin hook holds a door or gate open (or closed) with a hook on one side and an eye on the other, which is handy for back doors, French doors and sheds.
